An exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of one of the Peninsula's most visited destinations. The successful incumbent will be based at the beautiful Briars in Mt Martha and will work with a talented, values-driven team.

About the business

The Briars is one of the largest properties owned and run by the Mornington Peninsula Shire. The site covers 230-hectares incorporating bushland, farmland and a State significant heritage precinct with 1840’s Homestead. Nine staff and over 70 volunteers maintain and develop the Briars, which welcomes over 200,000 guests per year, making it one of the most visited destinations on the peninsula.

About the Role 

The successful incumbent will have a strong understanding of best-practice operations and safety requirements and experience applying this knowledge to a visitor destination to support the broader visitor experience. The successful incumbent will understand that many of the tasks undertaken occur in the visitor space and therefore will have the people skills to engage visitors in their daily work and schedule tasks with consideration of the visitor experience.

The Briars is a small team, the members of which pitch in to help each other as required. The successful incumbent will share similar values to the team, supporting staff, volunteers and tenants to deliver the best possible experience for visitors.

Availability will be required on some weekends and public holidays.

You will be required to:

  • Support the development of the Briars into a significant destination by maintaining exceptional visitor experience standards and by supporting other team members in the delivery of programs, experiences and events including
    • Assisting with traffic management during events;
    • Maintaining hire and event spaces;
    • Horticultural maintenance to visitor amenity areas (supplementary mowing, weeding, mulching etc);
    • Undertaking maintenance works to ensure visitor safety;
    • Providing support during the delivery of visitor programs;
    • Caring for the Heritage Farm animals using best-practice husbandry techniques;
  • Assist to maintain the Briars depot, fleet and other operation assets;
  • Assist in supervising the Outdoor Volunteers including supporting their work plans;
  • Support the Team Leader Operations to deliver capital and priority projects;
  • Identify and report upon opportunities to increase efficiencies and reduce safety risks and incidents;
  • Monitor the delivery of the Briars’ SIMS2 contracts to ensure they are delivered on time and to the contracted quality;
  • Contributes to the development of master, strategic and business plans.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience maintaining and improving plant, equipment, infrastructure and horticultural areas within a visitor destination.
  • Application of agricultural sciences principles and livestock management.
  • Understand of maintenance of park infrastructure including hard and soft landscape features.
  • Strong OHS skills and knowledge relevant to the land management and construction industry.
  • High level computer literacy.
  • Experience working with native and farm animals.
  • Demonstrated ability to objectively discuss and resolve problems – internally and externally.
  • High level of self-awareness with the ability to identify and discuss and action opportunities for growth and development.
  • High standard of active listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Share the values of the Briars team and can build strong and effective relationships with other team members, the community and other stakeholders.
  • Hold a valid Working with Children Employee Licence.
  • Undertake an Australian Criminal History Check provided by the Shire.
  • Hold a valid Victorian Drivers Licence.
