About the Business
The Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Communication Team manages a range of communication channels including social, broadcast and print media; Shire websites and intranet; email newsletters plus a range print collateral. The Events Team supports the planning, compliance and implementation of a range of events across the Shire.

About the Role 

Based at the Shire’s Rosebud Office the Communications Officer will be required to:

  • Develop, deliver and evaluate communication plans for Shire projects under supervision of Senior Communications Advisor/s and Team Leader.
  • Develop communication collateral and content in accordance with communications plans
  • Identify positive story opportunities across the Shire
  • Research and write stories for the Shire’s internal communication channels
  • Maintain key working relationships with relevant journalists, writers and specialist reporters across all channels and mediums
  • Provide timely media responses and respond to media enquiries in a timely manner
  • Provide support with the development and implementation of internal and Shire managed community events as required.

Job Tasks & Responsibilities
The primary role of the position is to produce communication collateral and content including print, online and digital materials in accordance with communication strategies. The Communications Officer will work collaboratively across the Shire and initiate and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

The role will provide support with the development and implementation of community events as required and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop, deliver and evaluate communication plans for Shire projects under supervision of Senior Communications Advisor/s and Team Leader
  • Identify positive story opportunities across the Shire
  • Research and write stories for the Shire’s internal communication channels
  • Keep accurate and complete records of work activities in accordance with legislative requirements and the Shire’s records, information security and privacy policies and requirements
  • Maintain key working relationships with relevant journalists, writers and specialist reporters across all channels and mediums
  • Provide timely media responses and respond to media enquiries in timely manner

Skills & Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, media and/or public relations
  • Demonstrated experience in communications field, preferably within a government agency
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of media releases
  • High level of experience in developing communications strategies
  • High level of experience in writing content and editing for a range of publications, communications channels and audiences
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Sound knowledge of media relations
  • Knowledge and practical use of Microsoft Suite

Mandatory Licences & Checks

  • Hold an Employee Working with Children Check (mandatory)
  • Be prepared to undertake an Australian Criminal History Check (mandatory
  • Hold a current Drivers Licence (mandatory)
